Down the Rabbit Hole
One of the many fixtures of West Sonoma County( besides Mom’s Apple Pie, Kozlowsky Farms, Korbel Winery - I could go on but I would be getting off on a tangent) since 1994 has been Ace Cider in the Hole, or just simply Ace Cider, a micro cider mill located on the northern most edge of Sebastopol just past Andy’s Produce. For years it was housed on the corner of Gravenstein Hwy North and Graton Road in a beautiful forest green box of a building that housed an informal pub and a stage where live bands would play toe-tapping music. Recently, they’ve moved 1/2 mile south of that location into a non-descript warehouse looking building, limited their pub food to only on Fridays from 2 – 5pm and there are no more bands. But the cider is still available and that’s ultimately why you go.
Ace produces and serves fives kinds of cider, two are seasonal: the Berry and the Apple Honey made with Sonoma Wildflower Honey. The Ace Apple is the first cider they made and it tastes a little like a white wine and the Perry is made with vanilla, lastly is the Joker. My favorite was the Pear Cider but they don’t make that one anymore, sigh. Their ciders are all made and bottled right in the building that houses the pub using local ingredients.
Anyway, to wrap it up, if you’re on the way to Mom’s for an apple pie or taking a drive out to Armstrong Redwood Reserve to do some hiking, why not stop by Ace Cider and sample a flight – yep, ask them for a flight to taste. They’re great people and would love to tell you the story of their cider.
